Man killed in Hawthorne shooting

A 49-year-old man is dead in a Hawthorne shooting, authorities said today.

The shooting occurred about 10:45 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of El Segundo and Crenshaw boulevards, said Hawthorne police Lt. C. Port.

The victim apparently tried to drive away from the area and crashed in the 3300 block of west El Segundo Boulevard, according to Deputy Tracy Koerner of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

Officers found the man “suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper torso,” Koerner said.

The victim was taken by paramedics to Harbor UCLA Medical Center and pronounced dead, Port said.

An investigation was underway with the help of sheriff’s homicide detectives, he said.

The victim was shot in front of a strip mall, according to a news videographer at the scene.

The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert for both directions of El Segundo Boulevard between Yukon Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard.
