Monrovia High Juniors Start Environmentally Sustainable Streetwear Co. During Pandemic
By Luca Ammon, MHS Student
Pier Clothing is a small clothing brand based in Monrovia, which promotes environmentally sustainable streetwear.
The small start-up was founded in May of 2020 by four juniors at Monrovia High: Luca Ammon, Tyler Ford, Sonny Sluiter, and Scott Reynolds, all ages 16 through 17 who primarily advertise on the popular social media platform TikTok.
They currently donate 20% of their profits to the Environmental Working Group — a large nonprofit in Washington D.C. that specializes in research and advocacy in the areas of agricultural subsidies, toxic chemicals, drinking water pollutants, and corporate accountability. Through much success, they have amassed over 10,000 followers and over 160,000 likes across all of their videos.
Through the videos, they have been able to reach a variety of different people, countries and social media influencers with millions of followers. Pier Clothing sells an array of different items, their most popular being hats, crewnecks and sweatshirts — which have sold out and are currently being restocked due to high demand.
Their clothing is meant to resemble the Southern California lifestyle: sunsets, beaches, and good times. Pier Clothing is based out of Monrovia. However, they have done photo shoots all over Southern California, from Malibu to downtown Los Angeles.
Pier Clothing was created during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The founders wanted to pursue something that would both challenge their entrepreneurial skills and give them purpose during such difficult times.
