Pasadena Councilmember Victor Gordo’s campaign for mayor declared victory over five-year incumbent Mayor Terry Tornek Thursday. As of Friday morning, Gordo holds 54.37% of the vote compared to Tornek’s 45.63%.
“I am incredibly honored by the tens of thousands of voters who placed their faith in me. Their message that we need a city government that puts their interests first is clear and I won’t let them down. I will represent the best interest of all residents of our city,” Gordo said in a statement released by his campaign.
He thanked volunteer and contributors who worked on his campaign.
“I also want to applaud my opponent, Mayor Terry Tornek, for running a spirited campaign, and for his service and years-long dedication to our city,” Gordo said.
“This election was never about one person — it was about the people of Pasadena. The voters wanted change — and to take the city in a new direction. I am excited to work together with Pasadena residents and with my colleagues on the city council to move our city forward during this challenging time.”
Gordo currently represents District 5 on the City Council where he has served for two decades. He will be sworn in as the new mayor alongside Councilwoman-elect Felicia Williams in December.
“The voters have made a pretty decisive decision,” Tornek said Tuesday as Gordo pulled ahead in the ballot count with a decisive lead. “It’s pretty clear they preferred someone other than me, so I am grateful for the opportunity I’ve had to serve. Pasadena is a great place. I’m just disappointed that I won’t be part of the leadership anymore.”
