Story at a glance Angela Davis is a scholar and activist known for her involvement in the civil rights movement. She is controversial to many due to her critiques of capitalism and endorsement of communism. A Black, lesbian woman, Davis identifies strongly with the current movements for equality. Standing in court with her afro and fist raised, clenched, in the air, Angela Davis became an icon to many, a villain to others.
She was prosecuted for three capital charges after guns belonging to her were used in an armed takeover of a courtroom in California in 1970 that resulted in four deaths. She was acquitted and went on to have a long career as a professor, activist and author. Now 76, the scholar and activist identifies as a “little c communist,” she told the New York Times in a recent interview in a recent interview .
