After six weeks of racing and training, Santa Anita Race Track had its second equine death in less than a week when a horse was euthanized Monday. It was the 25th death of a horse since Dec. 26, 2018.

The gelding, Spectacular Music, was taken off the course by the jockey and taken to the barns after suffering what appeared to be an injury to the pelvis. Veterinarians determined that the horse had to be euthanized.

During last Friday’s early morning training, Commander Coil was euthanized after suffering a shoulder injury.

The number of fatalities at Santa Anita Park resulted in the Los Angeles DA initiating an investigation last month. The racetrack closed after the 21st horse died in March and put into place sweeping safety measures.
