With the grueling regular season out of the way, the Monrovia wrestling team has proved its worth as the team shifts its focus to CIF action in the coming weeks.

The Wildcats are coming off an impressive showing at the Rio Hondo League finals on Jan. 30. On the boys’ side, every wrestler placed at least third or higher with seniors Maury Rams and Rashad Flood each taking first place in the 195-pound division and heavyweight division, respectively.

Other notable performances included Jacob Chooniyam finishing in third place (106 lbs.), Josh Quinones finishing in third place (138 lbs.), Hunter Nicely finishing in second place (160 lbs.), Timothy Gutierrez finishing in second place (172 lbs.) and Michael Jordan also finishing in second place (220 lbs.).

All aforementioned boy wrestlers, with the inclusion of alternates Adam Marin and Gage Nicely, will compete at the CIF-SS Individual Championships at Brea Olinda High School on Friday and Saturday.

As for the girls, Jillian Borrego, Mary Tuite, Zara Frausto, Jasmine Zamor and Karla Guzman will compete at CIF Regionals at Camarillo High School on Saturday. The top six wrestlers in that competition will qualify for CIF Finals at Roosevelt High School on Feb. 15 and 16.
