Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) officials joined Pasadena High School (PHS) students, staff, and parents at a ceremonial ribbon cutting and celebration of the newly remodeled Tom Hamilton Gymnasium at Pasadena High School on Tuesday. The ceremony was followed by the boys’ junior varsity basketball game at 3:30 p.m. and the boys’ varsity game at 5 p.m.

“The renovation of the gymnasium delivers enhanced opportunities for the students of PHS to concurrently pursue excellence in academics and athletics,” said Superintendent Brian McDonald.

The modernization of the 58,000-square-foot athletic complex includes the 8,800-square-foot gymnasium with a full-size basketball court, bleachers, lobby, concession stand, restrooms, and new entrance. The adjacent locker room area, which is slated for completion in early 2019, includes team rooms, administrative offices, and customized storage for athletic equipment. Construction upgrades were also made to the pool area. New air conditioning systems were installed and electrical systems were upgraded.

The only complaint a few visitors noticed was that the overall lighting is limited in the gym.

The next phase of renovations for PHS includes landscaping around the gymnasium as well as the rest of the campus and modernization of the small gym.

“The gymnasium is a symbol of our proud Bulldog athletic tradition and our promising future, and we are grateful to the community for their support of our student athletes,” said PHS Principal Robert Hernandez.

PHS serves more than 1,700 students in grades nine-12 and currently fields sports teams in basketball, football, volleyball, cross country, water polo, tennis, cheer, soccer, baseball, softball, golf, swimming, and track and field.

The $18,949,326 million project was funded by Measure TT, the $350 million school bond initiative approved by area voters in 2008. For more information about Measure TT, visit measurett.org.

The project was designed by Flewelling & Moody with the Nazerian Group as the general contractor.
