Arcadia Named One of the Safest Cities in California This Year
By Hansol Hwang
Arcadia is ranked 44th safest city in California this year, according to “50 Safest Cities in California for 2018,” a report recently released by SafeWise.
In order to produce these rankings, analysts at SafeWise reviewed the FBI’s crime statistics and population data for 2016, which is the most recent information, according to SafeWise. The criterion for a safe city was based on the number of reported violent crimes in each city per 1,000 people. Violent crimes are categorized into aggravated assault, murder, rape and robbery. If a city was tied, then the number of property crimes was factored in. Property crimes are categorized as burglary, arson, larceny-theft and car theft.
“We were impressed to find California’s 50 safest cities reported an average of just one violent crime for every 1,000 people—that’s 80 percent lower than the U.S. average, according to the most recent FBI crime report,” SafeWise Security Analyst Alexia Chianis said. “Property crime rates were also quite low, with well over half of the cities reporting fewer than twenty crimes of this type per 1,000 people.”
In 2016, Arcadia had a population of 58,816, with 1.41 violent crimes per 1,000 people and 27.92 property crimes per 1,000 people, according to SafeWise.
Sixty-two percent of the 50 cities that were listed were from Southern California and 38 percent of the cities were from Northern California, according to SafeWise. The top five cities in order are Danville, Murrieta, San Ramon, Irvine and Aliso Viejo.
Cities that fell below identified population thresholds or failed to submit a complete FBI crime report were excluded from the ranking system, according to SafeWise.
