We are only one week into the high school football season but the Muir Mustangs are already turning heads as they traveled out to the opposite end of the San Gabriel Valley and defeated Charter Oak 35-24 on Friday.

Charter Oak has always been renowned as one of SGV’s longtime powerhouses. However, Muir went into its season opener showing it is not a team to be taken lightly.

Despite falling behind by a touchdown in the first quarter, the Mustangs quickly recovered to get themselves back in the game.

Mustangs’ quarterback Brian Love led the charge, throwing for 275 yards (15 of 22) with a couple of touchdown passes. Love was complimented by an impressive performance by running back Jahlique Stephens, who burned the Charter Oak defense all game as he recorded 12 carries for 125 yards to go along with two touchdowns.

Muir defense also made critical plays to prevent the Chargers from building momentum. Linebacker Adrian Zepeda had a big hand in disrupting Charter Oaks’ offense, picking up eight tackles.

The Mustangs will not return to the gridiron until Aug. 31 when they head up north to take on Stellar Prep from Oakland.
