The Muir varsity football squad kicked off their 2019 season with a big win, defeating the CIF-SS Division 11 defending champion Western Pioneers 26-6 on Friday night.

Led by new coach Zaire Calvin, the Mustangs put the rest of the Pacific League on notice with a series of impressive big plays. The first big play of the night was a 44 yard toss by senior quarterback Amaris Harrison to receiver Desmond Shay. Then, Harrison hit junior running back Tyrikk Lawson with a 35 yard touchdown pass.

Harrison continued to make big plays in the second quarter with a 66 yard bomb to junior receiver Calen Bullock, followed by a 14 yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Joseph Dolloway. Then, in the third quarter, Harrison flashed his speed, running 44 yards down the field for a touchdown to put the Mustangs up 19-6. Lawson sealed the victory with a 45 yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Muir’s defense was just as solid as the offense, notching two turnovers, a fumble and an interception, while holding the Pioneers to a mere six points. However, those six points came on a kickoff return touchdown to open the game, showing the only flaw in the Mustangs game was on the special teams unit.

The Mustangs will face Hart this Friday at 7 p.m. at the College of the Canyons field.
