Pasadena Unified Hosts Town Hall Meetings on Graduation Requirements
High school counselors and principals will host four Town Hall meetings February 20 – March 27, 2018 to inform families and students about Pasadena Unified School District’s (PUSD) graduation requirements that will take effect with the graduating class of 2019.
“Pasadena Unified high schools are preparing students with advanced skills to excel in higher education and the global economy,” said Dr. Marisa Sarian, Ph.D., PUSD Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Instruction. “Our high school students get amazing opportunities to put classroom learning into practice thanks to partnerships with Pasadena’s vibrant health, STEM, arts, and business sectors.”
In addition to earning credits for required courses, students must complete hours of community service or work-based learning, submit a graduate portfolio, and present a graduate defense.
The graduation requirements are in line with the Pasadena Unified “Graduate Profile,” adopted as part of the district’s strategic plan. The Graduate Profile calls for students who are simultaneously prepared to excel in college and connected to the community and world around them.
Community service and work-based learning requirements ensure that students connect classroom learning with real-world experiences that prepare them for the workforce. Students can complete internships, volunteer with local organizations, or get on-the-job experience.
The graduate portfolio and defense present a valuable opportunity for students to showcase their proficiency in the four Cs (critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration) and reflect on their own growth. Portfolios are a compilation of the student’s best work during the course of their high school careers. In the oral defense, students use technology and audio/visual media to present their portfolios before a panel of teachers, counselors, administrators, and industry experts.
