New York, New York here we come. On June 10, join the Angeles Chorale as they conclude their 42nd season, Made in America, with a tribute to the city that never sleeps. The Chorale’s 2016-2017 musical road trip continues with “A Musical Bite of the Big Apple: From Broadway to Bernstein,” celebrating American classics and the New York composers who created them.

“The concert will begin with the traditional side of New York,” explained Artistic Director/Conductor John Sutton.

One of the classic pieces, The Promise of Living by AaronCopeland is one Sutton describes as “hopeful,” and “really captures America.” Also in the first half are Harlem Songs by composer Gwyneth Walker, who has taken three poems by Langston Hughes and set them to song. Her works combined with the words of Hughes will transport audiences to a hot summer night in the city. Harlem Songs is “a true celebration of the culture of Harlem” adds Sutton.

“You can’t go to New York without Leonard Bernstein, who captured the sound of the American spirit” says Sutton. The chorale will be performing the notable Chichester Psalms as well as a medley of songs from his Broadway musical, West Side Story. Also on the program are works by Dvorak, Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington, Billy Joel and Stephen Sondheim.

Audiences will be in for a special treat, as Philip Crowley, the on-air voice of Shark Tank on ABC will be the concert storyteller. He will act as a narrator and tour guide, adding a unique opportunity for the audience to fully immerse themselves in the musical journey.

Mark your calendars for June 10, and join Angeles Chorale for “A Musical Bite of the Big Apple.” Tickets are $30 if purchased in advance online at www.angeleschorale.org or $35 at the door.
