Next month, on Oct. 6, Santa Anita Family Service (SAFS) will host a very important fund-raising event at the Historic Castle Green in Pasadena.
“Leaders Who Make a Difference” will honor two of the giving leaders who have personally dedicated themselves to helping victims of domestic abuse, families in turmoil, seniors who are alone and need care, and veterans who need an understanding partner and a helping hand.
Supervisor Michael Antonovich and SAFS Board Member Jay Coleman are two of these dedicated individuals who will be thanked for their long-time service during an evening of music, heavy – and delicious – hors d’oeuvres, and a no-host cocktail bar. The event begins at 6 p.m. and ends at 9 p.m., and also includes a fun silent auction.
Back in 1951 Santa Anita Family Service had a different name: it was called “Monrovia Family Service” and its focus was very local. Today, with the help of many passionate supporters over the last 65 years, Santa Anita Family Service has grown to serve individuals and families throughout the San Gabriel Valley, with programs that now also include veterans and seniors with offices in Monrovia, Pomona, and Covina.
As for this special event location, the Historic Castle Green is known as one of the most cherished historic buildings in Pasadena. Originally constructed in 1893, the Hotel Green was the home of the Valley Hunt Club and the Tournament of Roses Association. The hotel was expanded in 1897 to include the “Castle” which later became the location of many Hollywood films. In 1919 Rudolph Valentino began the castle’s movie days when he kissed Dorothy Gish’s hand in a film entitled “Nobody Home.” The Hollywood tradition has continued since then with such films as “The Sting” and “Sneakers,” as well as many TV shows.
In a thank you letter to SAFS, Noelle, a domestic abuse survivor and SAFS client, writes “On my journey to wholeness, I didn’t find the woman I used to be: I found the woman I was created to be.” If you would like to make a difference to some very special people, please join us on Oct. 6 at the Historic Castle Green.
