Los Angeles County Supervisor candidate Kathryn Barger filed a petition for writ of mandate against Registrar-Recorder Dean Logan and fellow Supervisorial candidate Darrell Park on Monday.

The writ takes issue with statements in Park’s candidate statement that reference his opposition to Donald Trump’s candidacy for president and the support he has earned from the Los Angeles County Democratic Party.

In response to a hearing on the matter in the Los Angeles Superior Court scheduled for Sept. 8, Park released the following statement:

“I am proud of my opposition to Donald Trump and I hope that Kathryn Barger understands the importance of candidates, officeholders, and other public figures coming out publicly against his divisive and hateful rhetoric. My candidate statement went through a thorough review process and was approved two weeks ago by the registrar’s office. Furthermore, I used what was largely the same candidate statement in the June Primary Election and neither Barger nor any of my other six opponents took issue with it. This action by Barger’s campaign is nothing more than a political stunt, which aims to waste taxpayer money and bleed resources from our grassroots campaign.”

Darrell Park served two presidents in the White House Office of Management and Budget. Since moving to Los Angeles County over a decade ago, he has divided his time between helping clean energy start-up companies, teaching, and writing. He is the author of “Better Than We Found It: Simple Solutions to Some of the World’s Toughest Problems.”

Park earned an undergraduate degree in history from Allegheny College and a graduate degree in public policy from Georgetown University. He also earned a master’s in management from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 2005. He and his wife are the proud parents of a 9-year-old son.

Despite being outspent by a considerable margin, Park earned a second place finish in June’s open-seat Primary Election for Los Angeles County’s 5th Supervisorial District. The district boasts a strong voter registration and performance advantage for Democrats.
