Monrovia Reads Annual Summer Fundraiser

For the past several years, Monrovia’s literacy foundation, Monrovia Reads, has held a Chili Cook-Off.
This year, as a change of pace, the organization is holding a pie-baking contest instead. In conjunction with the competition, they are also holding a Sizzling Summer BBQ.
The event will be held on July 23 starting at 6 p.m. at the Monrovia Tennis Club.
Tickets for the all-inclusive dinner will include tastes of all 11 pies in contention for the coveted blue ribbon. The entrants include pies from Monrovia High School Assistant Principal Fil Lujan; Ken Singleton, from the Monrovia Schools Food Service; as well as Assistant Superintend Sue Kaiser. The schools may no longer teach cooking, but the school district apparently breeds great cooks anyway.
Monrovia Reads not only gives away thousands of books every year to students and adults, it also supports the Pro-Active Tutoring (PAT) Program that provides college and peer tutors to students at the high school and middle schools. In addition, the program also helps support the Monrovia Reads and Plays Van and provides scholarships to several Monrovia High School students who are looking to continue their education.
