A 17-year-old male was killed after the convertible 2002 BMW he was driving crashed at high speed into a concrete pole near the Rose Bowl and then caught fire about 2:49 a.m. Sunday, May 8.

Brendan Leon, 17, was identified as the victim. He attended San Marino High School.

A witness said that the car was travelling at a high rate of speed southbound on West Drive when it crashed at Seco Street before catching fire. The witness said there was only one car involved.

“The driver and sole occupant of the car sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collision,” Lieutenant John Mercado said in statement. “He was pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident by Pasadena Fire Department personnel.”

The investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing. Anyone with information should call Lieutenant Pete Hettema at (626) 744-7159.
