Monrovia will celebrate its 130th anniversary in musical style with a free concert this Sunday, May 14.

The event will begin at 8 a.m. with an opening welcome and pancake breakfast at Library Park. Then, at 9 a.m., the Monrovia Day Parade will be back and better than ever with a variety of civic and school district themed participants.

After the parade, the community celebration will begin at around 10:30 a.m., and the activities will last throughout the day. Complete with live entertainment, performances by Monrovia Unified School District students and Centre Stage participants, carnival games, laser tag, a dunk tank, food, and a good old fashioned pie eating contest … the Monrovia Day celebration is a day you certainly will not want to miss!

The first Monrovia Days Music Festival was created in 2014 by Monrovian and local hair salon owner Carole Anne Kaufman, also known as “The Whistling Diva.” She wanted to reignite the city’s birthday celebration tradition. She announced, “Our mission is community connections in concert. We are committed to bringing neighbors together through music.”

This year, Monrovia Days Music Festival is going to culminate the long weekend of festivities that will begin with Monrovia Street Fair on Friday evening and Community Parade on Saturday morning.

Professional live bands will entertain guests with rock, pop, jazz, blues, reggae, and world-champion musical whistling. Hawaii’s hottest pop group, Crimson Apple, “The Voice” contestant Chase Walker, and the dance duo TeamLz will perform at the festival, among others.

The newest addition to the festival is the craft beer garden. It will serve Pacific Plate Brewing Company’s famous Mango IPA, Horchata Stout, and a light Monrovia Days brew, specially created for the event. Wine will also be available.

Pacific Plate Brewing Company is the smallest licensed brewery in Southern California. It offers exclusive selection of beers that are made with the exotic ingredients from around the world such as Madagascar bourbon vanilla beans and Guatemalan Cardamom.

The one-barrel batch microbrewery is the first and only craft brewery in Monrovia’s history. When the city incorporated 130 years ago, the newly formed government passed a tippler’s law, prohibiting the sale of alcohol.

Other features of the music festival include live art projects, kid’s activities and jumpers, wide selection of food trucks, vendors, and artisans.

There will be special bicycle friendly booths, including mobile bike repair and a complimentary valet to park two-wheeled vehicles.

Pet-related booths, activities, and surfing dogs will comprise the “Bark Park.”

A portion of the event proceeds will benefit the Boys and Girls Club of the Foothills.
