Monrovia Day Celebration Planned to Span May 13 to 15
By Susan Motander
Monrovia’s birthday celebration will span three days this year. In January, the City of Monrovia and the Monrovia Unified School District (MUSD) decided to work together to recreate a new and exciting parade as a key point of the weekend. But this is only a small part of the planned events.
On Friday, May 13, special activities will take place in Old Town in conjunction with weekly the Friday Night Street Fair.
On Saturday, May 14, the city, schools, and Centre Stage (a local youth theatrical group) have partnered to present a community parade and festival in Old Town Monrovia. The celebration starts with a welcome and breakfast in Library Park.
The parade begins at 9 a.m. on Myrtle Avenue, starting at Chestnut and going up to the park. After the parade, the celebration will continue with activities in the park throughout the day. There will be performances from MUSD students and those from Centre Stage. In addition, there will be carnival games, a dunk tank (for which City Councilmember Alex Blackburn volunteered at a recent city council meeting), and a pie-eating contest for which Mayor Tom Adams, Councilman Larry Spicer, and City Manager Oliver Chi have also volunteered. For up to the minute information on the celebration, go to www.cityofmonrovia.org/community/page/monrovia-days.
On Sunday, May 15, the fun will continue with a Monrovia Music Festival in Library Park. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/monroviadays.
Do not forget the annual Friends of the Library Book Sale on Friday (12 p.m. to 5 p.m.) and Saturday (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.).
