A trending topic in some of our favorite new jams is the mention of our golden-hour-induced city. From Drake’s house to South Central, SKRT around LA by way of the big names in the rap game who have dropped new tracks this year. Mostly staying to our coastal regions, this is a guide song map as referenced by top tracks from a playlist that likely has the word “lit” in it.
“No More Parties In LA” – Kanye West (Mulholland Drive)
Nothing feels more sobering than a Monday morning drive to work with this Life of Pablo track quietly playing in the background. Specifically, Ye speaks of the curvy drive that is Mulholland with a warning to stop texting while on your way to Kim K’s (or in our case, that really sick froyo place is Calabasas.) Good reminder.
“The Hills” – The Weeknd (Gated community where a Hadid sister lives)
The video visually sums up the area Abel is likely talking about here, but a Pacific Palisades neighborhood of mansions hidden away is obviously referenced here by the baby Hadid sister he’s been hanging around.
“502 Come Up” – Bryson Tiller (Hollywood Hills)
The Louisville native starts off one of the most underrated tracks from T R A P S O U L by equating waking up in the Hollywood Hills to making it. We’re not sure we – or the ladies of Raya – would necessarily agree, but we like the sentiment.
“Jumpman” – Drake + Future (Nobu)
A drive up the PCH will bring you to the really beautiful wood front of Nobu, a place we would only ball out for if someone told us Drake was at his usual table. Referenced by Future in their hype track, here’s to hoping the next time we want to spend $100 to feel kind of full from luxe raw fish we’ll see our two faves in attendance.
“Summer Sixteen” – Drake (Drake’s House)
It’s cool if you don’t believe us on this one, but Drake’s house is a possible location for you to end up at if you befriend an Instagram model in your community college class. A summer sixteen spent in a pool bigger than Kanye’s? What a daydream.
“LA Confidential” – Torey Lanez (LAX)
The one locale mentioned in Tory Lanez’ confessional track, that could also be debated as a larger statement about monogamy and its relevancy in 2016, is LAX. We can’t pinpoint if it’s a reference to sex on a plane, sex near the airport or just where he is meeting the shady lady he is having sex with, but it’s in there.
“Come Down” – Anderson .Paak (Malibu)
Our cover man from the latest issue titled his breakthrough album Malibu, with surf and Southern California references strewn throughout. In this jazzy, danceable top track you can almost feel the beach party in the background. Add it to the summer playlist we know you are already curating.
“90210” – Travi$ Scott (Beverly Hills)
With a girl from the valley in his vehicle, Scott is just looking for a quiet place to get to know the possible love of his life a little better. To be honest, B. Hills might not be your best spot. Too well lit and parking is such a hassle…
“On Me” – The Game (Compton)
The entire album is an ode to South Central, bringing in Dre, Snoop and even Fergie…”On Me” speaks more to returning to Compton post-fame.
