Music Exclusive: Matt Lange’s Split Personality Playlist

LA based producer/composer/DJ (and Berkeley grad) Matt Lange has discovered multiple personalities in his Split Personality playlist for LA CANVAS, and all to celebrate Ephemera, his debut album dropping on September 1oth of Deadmau5’s label mau5trap. Hand picked by the ‘mau5 himself, Lange executes a full-length debut accompanied by dark and textured tunes, all set up to satisfy our groove-hungry eardrums. Expect some expiremental tracks in his mix, too, along with eerie techno. See? All over the place in such a good way.

“This list is split between the club and my headphones. It only seemed right to include both as the non club material always influences my more club focused music. Below you’ll find some of the tracks I love playing out, and then some of the tracks that inspire me to find new ways to make dance music that keeps me interested in it.”

Lange currently has a remix in the works for Grammy-winning artist Imogen Heap slated for its release later this year, along with other note-worthy collabs in the works, and throughout Lange’s career, he has amassed quite the resume including helping to build and shape Above & Beyond’s underground-leaning label, Anjunadeep. Experience his live DJ set at his album release party on Thursday, September 10th at Sound Nightclub, and in the meantime, get clap-happy with his track selections and see what he has to say about all this good news:

Matt Lange – My Love Aside

This is the first single from my upcoming album, Ephemera. It’s dark but oddly happy sounding. Always works great in a club.

NIcole Moudaber & Skin- Someone Like You

I’ve really gotten into Nicole Moudaber’s music a lot this past year. Like much of her work, it’s groovy, dark,
and soulful.

Simon Baker Pres. BKR Project – Burnt Out

This is one of my recent favorite tracks to play out. My favorite kind of blend of techno and prog.

Life and Death – Some Things Rise

More cool proggy techno. My favorite moment of when I play out is when I eventually move into this kind of mood.

John Hopkins – Open Eye Signal (George Fitzgerald Remix)

I’m a huge fan of Jon Hopkins. This remix gives me the ability to play him out during a techno set. And it’s great. Win win.

Nine Inch Nails – Discipline (Matt Lange Remix)

I was pretty burnt out creatively after finishing the album. Doing this remix is what got me inspired again.

John Graham – Something New (Hybrid Remix)

John is one of my favorite producers (and is the one person I collaborated with on Ephemera), and Hybrid is one of my favorite acts of all time. Classy and timeless.

The Haxan Cloak – The Mirror Reflecting

Because sometimes it’s good to terrify your neighbors. This is actually one of the more melodic tracks in his catalog. Love this stuff.

BossFYTE – Think About It (Richard Devine Remix)

Richard doesn’t come out with remixes too often, but whatever he does… holy hell. Always inspiring.

Matt Lange – Lying To Myself

This is my favorite track off Ephemera. It’s deeply personal and I was pretty nervous about how it would be received. Thankfully it seems like everyone who’s heard it really likes it.
