Weaved into the textures and fabric of the UK techno scene, music gent Dave Angel graces LA with his ethos; the son of a Jazz musician, brother to Brit Hip-Hop artist Monie Love set Dave up as a force to be reckoned with during the 80s acid house explosion in London. With a weekly broadcast on pirate radio station Phaze One, he was instantaneously thrown into the media spotlight—MixMag, DJ Magazine and The Guardian all took note and featured him as one of the top-notch forces in the UK techno/acid house scene.
And it only grew as he set his ships to sail. From DJing professionally, producing, and remixing, Angel’s musical footprint has seen the likes of ‘Nightmare Mix’ edit of Eurhythmics ‘Sweet Dreams’ his EPs ‘The Family’ and Royal Techno’ had plenty of smart moves, and more. “When I got into techno and acid it was like ‘this is the new sound, this is the new technology!’”, says Dave. “I was thinking: ‘this is the music of the youth, and 20 years from now it’s going to be like the rock of the sixties!’—I had to get in on it.”
In early 2015 Dave made a debut on the industry renowned Crosstown Rebels with ‘Revelation’ & ‘Guru’ proving the ability to effortlessly turn his hand to a deeper, hypnotic and further twisted sound for super homie Damian Lazarus’ revered label. The release went on to receive three Mixmag reviews with BBC Radio 1 airplay from B.Traits, premieres on THUMP and Clash, whilst a Beatport chart placement of #21 made an all round success of this debut. Vigure – Legpa Pa (Deeperfect Records)
I’ve been playing this track for over a year now and it still gets me every time I drop it in my sets, so in my opinion I recommend this one as a future classic. Solid big room production, but really deep and moody with some nice vocal elements.
Dosem – It Matters To Me (Tronic Music)
This producer has been getting bigger and bigger over the last couple of years and continues making great music now. This one however, was a bit of an unsung track of his I feel, a secret weapon to pull out of the bag. I can play this in a House or Techno set and it does the job every time. Wicked 303 bassline in this.
Erotic Discourse – Paul Woolford presents Bobby Peru (20/20 Vision) –
How can somebody use just a kick drum and one crazy synth sound and still keep the listener interested? Well this track does it.. and an absolute bomb. It recently got a remix by Dense & Pika on Hotflush, but I still prefer the original. It’s a classic.
Lil Louis – Why’d You Fall (Epic)
This is one of my favourites. The EP was called “I Called You”, but the one track that really stood out for me was “Why Do You Fall” and that track I used to play real late in the club and it had a sequence in there where he was using a bleep touch phone and he played a sequence from the phone and it was just unbelievable, typical Lil’ Louis kinda style bassline, proper jackin’. For me he was the don.
Royal Techno E.P. – Dave Angel (Rotation Records) –
This one has to go in as it was my first release on my own Rotation Records imprint. Renaat from R&S Records came to my studio, I played him this E.P. and told him that it was going out on my new label, he said “This is Royal Techno”, so that’s what I named it.
Ron Trent – Altered States (Warehouse Records) –
This is a really special track in my collection, I used to spend hours and hours and hours mixing this, because it was such a beautiful track and it just evolved really nice once you added a different track to it in the mix. The flavour of it was just beautiful. The history behind this track is that it was recorded on cassette tape at the time as well.
