Woodstock Anniversary Party Held Last Weekend
By Terry Miller
In conjunction with A Night With Janis Joplin, The Pasadena Playhouse celebrated the anniversary of Janis Joplin’s historic performance at Woodstock on Aug. 16, 1969. Select members of the cast from of A Night With Janis Joplin including Kacee Clanton (Janis) performed a 20-minute outdoor Woodstock concert, singing songs from various sets performed at the Woodstock Festival from Aug. 15-17, 1969. Bands that played the seminal music festival include Jimi Hendrix, The Who, The Band, Janis Joplin, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jefferson Airplane, Joan Baez, Santana, Joe Cocker, and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.
– Janis Joplin performed, “Piece of your Heart” for the first time at Woodstock in 1969. She was paid $7,500 to perform her set, which was 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. on the morning of Saturday, Aug. 16, 1969.
– An estimated 400,000 people attended the Woodstock Music and Arts Festival.
– Jimi Hendrix played what many consider to be the festival highlight, his version of “The Star Spangled Banner,” on Monday, Aug. 18, when only about 35,000 people—a small fraction of the total Woodstock audience—remained on the field due to the rains and mud.
A Night With Janis Joplin is now in its final performances at The Pasadena Playhouse and must close Sunday, Aug. 23, 2015. The production was extended by popular demand, and became a summer smash, garnering milestone numbers at The Pasadena Playhouse box office.
Beacon Media said “Truly amazing…a DO-NOT-MISS play!” Frontiers Magazine raved, “[Five stars] a triumphant production, a spectacular new run. By the night’s end you feel like you’ve truly seen a Joplin performance. The entire audience was on its feet shouting is approval and giving an umpteenth standing ovation.”
The production stars Mary Bridget Davies, following her Tony Award® nominated Broadway run. Pasadena native Kacee Clanton, also from the Broadway production of A Night With Janis Joplin, alternates the role of Janis Joplin with Davies. The production is conceived, written and directed by Randy Johnson, with choreography by Patricia Wilcox and musical direction by Tyler Evans.
