December is here and the holiday season is now in motion. Ready or not the parties, shopping, decorating, travel, family commitments, gift giving, food and more food have arrived. Instead of allowing the holidays to take you completely off your fitness journey, or waiting until January to begin one, you can take action daily, starting now, to prepare the way for an easier transition into the New Year. Here are 3 simple strategies to help you this month:
1. Have Your Food Strategy Ready. Set yourself up for success with a little advanced planning. Consider what your barriers are and find solutions to them. Ask yourself questions like these:
” “How can I prepare for the holiday food at my workplace?” Solution: prepare for the work week by bringing healthy snacks with you such as sliced fruit, cut vegetables, nuts and sliced deli meat.
” “How will I approach holiday parties and avoid overeating?” Solution: make sure you have a healthy meal no more than 2 hours before the party.
” “How can I deal with leftovers, and extra treats?” Solution: Consider making a plate for a guest to take home. When choosing to eat leftovers set up a nice meal and sit down at the table-no eating standing at the fridge door!
2. Rate Your Holiday Treats. Whatever dessert, candy or cream filled, sugar laden concoction is staring you in the face, make sure it is something that is REALLY, really, REALLY good! Rate it on a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being best. If the food item does not make it to a 4 or 5, turn it down. Yes, that’s right, push it away and go find a truly delicious treat that meets your higher standard, then savor and enjoy it with no regrets.
3. Schedule Your Exercise To Reduces Stress. Holidays often mean missed workouts. Do your best to keep your workout appointments, your daily walks, whatever it is you do to exercise. Keep it simple and make it fun! Sometimes following the schedule is necessary to lower stress and sometimes a break in routine is what our bodies need. Ask yourself: “what do I need do in my workout today?”
Face one work party, or one family gathering at a time, plan your meals in advance, rate your treats, and keep moving! Finish 2014 with confidence by taking action this month one-step and one day at a time. Be ready to embrace your fitness journey on January 1st, 2015 one step ahead!
