Rock the Canvas Pop-Up
Call for artwork open to residents of the San Gabriel Valley
Show off your creative side and headline your artwork at Rock the Canvas’ premiere pop-up gallery this summer during Temple City’s Concerts in the Park. Artists, students, teachers and culinary enthusiasts heralding from San Gabriel Valley are encouraged to exhibit their masterpieces at Rock the Canvas as it goes on tour Wednesday June 26, July 31 and August 21 from 5-9 p.m., at Temple City Park.
The first pop-up gallery on Wednesday, June 26 is themed, “Defining Diversity,” to explore the different dimensions of diversity through art. Toying with the old adage, “don’t play with your food,” the second pop-up gallery on Wednesday, July 31 is themed, “Food as Art,” and encourages the use of edible art mediums. Wrapping up the event series is the, “Go Green,” pop-up gallery on Wednesday, August 21 to highlight the importance of sustainability and eco-living.
“Events like Rock the Canvas build our community’s sense of pride and highlight the artistic ability we have to offer,” says Mayor Cynthia Sternquist. “Our public arts programming will put Temple City on the map next to other creative communities that attract people who want to visit cultural destinations.”
The City’s premiere Art in Public Places Program was created by the adoption of a formal public arts ordinance, establishing a visual arts initiative to enhance the local environment through procurement and installation of public artworks. Temple City is the most recent municipality in Los Angeles County to adopt a formal public arts ordinance, and artists participating in Rock the Canvas will pioneer the city’s creative efforts.
Artists may exhibit up to three artworks per Rock the Canvas event, and must supply their own easel or other equipment for displaying artwork. Participating artists are welcome to advertise their artworks, restaurants or creative studios, but may not sell items.
To apply, complete the participation form available online at www.tcpublicarts.com. Artists must email their completed participation form with up to 3 images of their artwork to publicarts@templecity.us by 5 p.m. Friday, June 14 or call the Communications Office at(626) 285-2171, ext. 2324.
