While many organizations are slowing down for the summer, Monrovia’s Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs are shifting into high gear (for you Rotarians, pun intended – for the Kiwanians , sorry about that). Within the last two weeks both clubs have held unusual meetings and joined together for a joint work project. The Kiwanians celebrated the life of a former member and the Rotarians assisted Monrovia’s own Olympic athlete. Together they worked to clean up the city.
Last Saturday, members of the Kiwanis met at Recreation Park, while Rotarians along with young men from the YMCA’s YLife group, met at Library Park. The project was the brainchild of Council Member Becky Shevlin who is not a member of either organization (although her husband is a Kiwanian) suggested that the two groups work to clean up the city. The Kiwanians picked up trash throughout Recreation Park and worked to weed the walking paths. The members of Rotary put “Service about Self” and along with the young men from the Y, picked up trash up and down Myrtle Avenue and the public parking lots throughout Old Town. More than a hundred bags of trash were picked up between the two sites.
