SMASHD Labs in Culver City

What do Lady GaGa, Megan Trainor, Uber, Dropbox, theSkimm, Warby Parker, and WeTransfer all have in common?

Tech investor/pop culture clairvoyant Troy Carter. The missing link between Silicon Valley and the entertainment industry knows a thing or two about picking talent. This past July, Carter and his talent agency Atom Factory, announced their accelerator SMASHD Labs.

Situated in Downtown Culver City, SMASHD is designed to find and mentor companies at the center of tech and culture. Back in September, WeTransfer was 1 of 6 startups hand picked by Carter to participate in the entrepreneurial bootcamp. Over the past 9 weeks, the file sharing team has been in the kitchen, working hard to expand its reach with some of the industry’s savviest mentors.

So why was Carter, a tech guy with substantial roots in music and entertainment, so keen on the international file-transfer service?

While plenty of developers would turn to additional features to broaden an app appeal, WeTransfer opted to go the exact opposite route. Designed to allow for the easy sending of files that are too big for a standard email account, WeTransfer presents users with an incredibly simple interface. Aside from the few fields, box and button, the rest of the screen is anything from artwork to advertisements, fusing utility and inspiration—seamlessly. Therein lies the beauty of WeTransfer’s business model.

But WeTransfer isn’t the first to go the minimalist route. They’re just the ones doing it so well that the Amsterdam-based startup already has more than 85 million transfers per month worldwide—that’s more than one billion transfers annually—with more than half of its global users working in creative industries.

WeTransfer Wallpaper Collaboration

Showing no signs of stopping, next year, WeTransfer is on track to double its total annual transfers from 1 to 2 billion. What’s more, Troy announced that he will be joining WeTransfer’s board just this past week—a major cosign of the progressive startup, which is largely being heralded as the future of the medium.

Want proof, next time you’ve got some digital heavy lifting to do, take your TIFFs over to WeTransfer.com and click through their stunning wallpapers—you might just learn a thing or two while you wait.
