Leak reported at chemical company in Atwater Village area

A chemical leak was reported Thursday at a business in the Atwater Village area, but no one was hurt, authorities said.

The problem was reported about 8:40 a.m. in the 4500 block of West Electronics Place, said Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

“This incident was initially received as an ‘automatic fire alarm’ and the first responding fire company upgraded it to a Hazardous Materials response with additional requested resources enroute,” Stewart said in a statement.

There was no fire, Stewart said.

“The business is `Huntsman Chemical’ and there was an incident reportedly during the transport of a product, which resulted in a leak,” Stewart said.

The building was evacuated, Stewart said.

“LAFD HazMat Squads are responding for the investigation and handling of any potential hazards,” Stewart said. “The plant manager is on scene, assisting firefighters.”

The type of substance spilled was not known.

“This type of incident is inherently detailed and technical, which takes time,” Stewart said. “The HazMat Squad members are preparing to make entry into the involved area. This is a static incident in that no additional leaks/releases etc. are occurring.

“For any residents in the area smelling an odor and wishing to evacuate — (the) current recommendation is to shelter in place — they are advised to travel south of Electronics Place,” Stewart said late Thursday morning.
