Run to support youth participation in STEAM

On June 16 the 2nd Annual Space Race Run/Walk 5K/10K returns to Hahamongna Watershed Park. “Space Race: Mission Possible” will raise funds to help local youth gain access and exposure to STEAM programs and careers. Lace up your running (or walking) shoes and meet at the starting line to help inspire students to shoot for the stars. The race offers a five kilometer loop and a 10 kilometer loop, paved and unpaved, along the Watershed Park area trail.

In elementary, middle, and high school, girls and boys take math and science courses in roughly equal numbers. However, historically the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics have been, and still are, predominantly white and male. Many social, economic, and environmental factors contribute to the under representation of women and people of color in science and engineering as undergraduates, in the workforce, and particularly at the upper levels of these professions. Your participation in “Space Race Run 2018” will help local student and youth access local STEAM programs and consider careers as scientists and engineers. Proceeds from this event will support student success by providing access to:

-Tutoring in math and science.

-STEAM Internships.

-College tours.

-Grants to engage in science and math focused programs.

-Arts to encourage students to think creatively and critically.

Why should you participate, and why is STEAM important?

STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. The end results are students who take thoughtful risks, engage in experiential learning, persist in problem-solving, embrace collaboration, and work through the creative process. These are the innovators, educators, leaders, and learners of the 21st century.
