Surprise! A true crime documentary tops Netflix movie viewership

“The Tinder Swindler” was last week’s most- streamed English-language movie on Netflix, with viewers spending 45.8 million hours watching the true crime documentary in its first five days of release, according to figures released by the streaming service Tuesday.

The comedy “Home Team,” inspired by New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton coaching his sixth-grade son’s team during his suspension for his involvement in the Bountygate scandal, was second for the second consecutive week 33.63 million hours watched in its first full week of release, 59.8% more than the 21.05 million hours watched the previous week when it was available for three days.

“The Royal Treatment” dropped to sixth after back-to-back first- place finishes with 8.51 million hours watched between Jan. 31 and Sunday, 68% less than the 26.85 million hours watched the previous week, the romantic comedy’s first full week of release.

“Don’t Look Up” dropped three spots to seventh with 6.93 million hours watched, 32.4% less than the 10.25 million hours the previous week. The satire was watched for 384.22 million hours in its 45 days of release through Sunday.

There were six films in addition to “The Tinder Swindler” that were in the latest top 10 not in the previous week’s.

The 2010 computer-animated comedy “Despicable Me” was eighth with 6.85 million hours watched while its 2013 sequel “Despicable Me 2” was third with 14.34 million hours watched.

The 2016 action thriller, “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi,” was fourth with 12.98 million hours watched. The 2009 science fiction action film “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” was fifth with 9.79 million hours watched.

The 2019 independent romantic comedy “Can You Keep a Secret?” was ninth with 6.14 million hours watched. The 2010 Dwayne Johnson-starring crime film “Faster” was 10th with 6.37 million hours watched.

“Red Notice” dropped out of the top 10 after 12 weeks and a record 445.25 million hours watched. Also dropping out of the top 10 were the World War II drama “Munich — The Edge of War”; the 2019 animated comedy “The Secret Life of Pets 2”; the romantic thriller “Brazen”; the 2018 computer- animated monster comedy “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation”; the 2018 supernatural horror thriller film “The Possession of Hannah Grace”; and the mystery thriller “A Perfect Enemy.”

Netflix’s most popular television program was  “The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window” with 60.48 million hours watched of the eight-episode comedy mystery in its first full week of release, 50.1% more than the 40.08 million hours watched the previous week when it was available for three days.

The eight-episode second season of “Raising Dion” was second with 49.09 million hours watched in the first six days it was available. The superhero drama’s first season was among two other programs in the latest top 10 not in the previous week, placing sixth with 26.46 million hours watched of its nine episodes.

The fourth and final season of “Ozark” was fourth after back-to-back first-place finishes with 44.63 million hours watched of its seven episodes, 53.7% less than the 96.34 million hours watched the previous week, its first full week of release.

The other program in the latest top 10 not in the previous week’s was the 10-episode second season of “Sweet Magnolias,” fifth with 43 million hours watched in its three days of release.

Dropping out of the top 10 were the horror series “Archive 81,”  the third season of the dating series “Too Hot to Handle” and the fifth season of The CW teen drama “Riverdale.”
