Son sues Azusa for dad’s death allegedly by motorcycle officer

The son of a 67-year-old man who died after he was accidentally struck by a motorcycle allegedly driven by an on-duty Azusa police officer in January has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city.

Plaintiff Kevin Li’s Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit seeks unspecified damages as well as compensation for funeral expenses, City News Service reported.

Li’s father, Xueqi Li of Covina, died as a result of blunt trauma, according to the coroner’s office.

A representative for the city of Azusa did not reply to a request for comment on the suit brought Thursday, according to City News Service.

The collision occurred about 9 p.m. Jan. 31 in Los Angeles County’s unincorporated area of Charter Oak. As Xueqi Li was crossing a street, Azusa police motorcycle Officer Keith Geoffrey Ascar drove east on Cienega Avenue at Asherton Avenue and mistakenly hit Li, according to the suit.

CBSLA reported that Xueqi Li was riding a bicycle during the fatal crash near the intersection of Cienega and Sunflower avenues.

Xueqi Li was taken to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. His son has lost his father’s love, support and companionship, according to the lawsuit.
