Monrovia Police Awarded $62K Grant

The safety of everyonetraveling is the focus of a grant awarded to the Monrovia Police Department.The $62,500 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety will assist the city’sefforts to reduce deaths and injuries on its roads.

“These are tryingtimes, and now more than ever, it is important that we are at the forefront oftraffic safety,” Monrovia Police Department Lt. Daniel Verna said. “Thisfunding allows us to educate and enhance the safety of all residents.” Theone-year grant is for the 2021 federal fiscal year, which runs from Oct. 1,2020 to Sept. 30, 2021.

The grant will fund avariety of traffic safety programs, including:

  • Patrolswith emphasis on alcohol and drug-impaired driving prevention.
  • Patrolswith emphasis on awareness and education of California’s hands-free cell phonelaw.
  • Patrolswith emphasis on education of traffic rights for bicyclists and pedestrians.
  • Patrolswith emphasis on awareness and education of primary causes of crashes: excessspeed, failure to yield, failure to stop at stop signs/signals, improperturning/lane changes.
  • Patrolswith emphasis on education and awareness of motorcycle safety.
  • Roadsidecheckpoints with an emphasis on awareness and education of alcohol anddrug-impaired driving prevention. 
  • Communityeducation presentations on traffic safety issues such as distracted driving,DUI, speed, bicycle and pedestrian safety.
  • Officertraining and/or recertification: Standard Field Sobriety Test, AdvancedRoadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) and Drug Recognition Expert.

“Through education andbehavior changes, we hope to create an environment that is safe and equitablefor all road users in our community,” Lt. Verna said. Funding for this programwas provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, throughthe National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
