Jurado moves into 2nd in LA Council District 14 race; de León leads

Ysabel Jurado gained a narrow lead Friday for second place in the election for the Los Angeles Council District 14 seat, trailing incumbent Kevin de León.

According to the LA County registrar-recorder/county clerk, Jurado, a tenant rights lawyer, took second with 21.51% of the vote totaling 5,214 ballots cast in her favor. Assemblyman Miguel Santiago, D-Los Angeles, had 21.42% or 5,193 votes.

De León lead the field of eight candidates with 6,143 votes totaling 25.34%.

On Wednesday morning, the vote count had Jurado in third with 18.92% and Santiago in second with 20.27%, in front of Jurado by 250 votes.

Santiago led Jurado by 291 votes in Wednesday afternoon’s count and by 148 votes in the count released Thursday afternoon.

District 14 consists of Boyle Heights, Lincoln Heights, downtown LA, El Sereno and Northeast Los Angeles.

Voters will choose one of the top two candidates in a November runoff because no single candidate will emerge with a clear majority of the primary vote.

A vote-count update was expected Saturday.
