On May 20, 2019, ChapCare announced the opening of its new state-of-the-art Kathryn Barger Health Center located on 1595 N. Lake Ave. in northwest Pasadena. This health center was made possible in part by generous funding provided by Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, 5th District. Additional funding was provided by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).
The need for this new health center cannot be overstated. The Kathryn Barger Health Center will replace ChapCare’s Lake Health Center, also in northwest Pasadena. ChapCare’s Lake Health Center was small (with only 5 medical exam rooms) and needed significant repairs (roof repairs, etc.). In 2018, ChapCare provided 6,820 medical visits to 2,396 unduplicated patients at that site. The new 4,500 square foot Kathryn Barger Health Center has 13 medical exam rooms (an increase of eight), and four behavioral health counseling rooms (including one group room). The new facility is located just a few blocks away from ChapCare’s Lake Health Center, and will absorb the patients from the current facility. At full capacity, ChapCare expects to be able to serve 3,800 unduplicated patients at this new health center, an increase of over 1,500 from its current Lake Health Center site.
“The Kathryn Barger Health Center is a gift,” said Margaret B. Martinez, MPH, ChapCare’s CEO. “The new site will allows us to increase patient capacity which is always important. In addition, integrating medical and behavioral health services under one roof will prove critical. At this location, we expect to serve the general community as well the homeless population. In both cases, one’s inability to manage their behavioral health condition(s) can have a serious impact on their ability to maintain their overall treatment plan.”
The Kathryn Barger Health Center is a comprehensive healthcare facility. Services offered include primary medical care, health insurance screening and enrollment, and pharmacy services (via delivery). Behavioral health counseling will be added in the future to achieve a fully integrated model. Hours of operation are Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. ChapCare provides low-or no-cost health services (Medi-Cal and Medicare) and accepts many Covered California and private insurance plans.
