London-based duo, Kai & Sunny make their LA debut this weekend with their show Caught by the Nest at the Subliminal Projects gallery. Their inspiration stems from nature and literature, in particular, Naoki Higashida’s novel, The Reason I Jump. The novel, narrated by a 13-year-old autistic boy, provides a colorful insight into the boy’s intimate connection with nature. Inspired by that connection, Kai & Sunny explore nature and its ability to envelope one in an expanded sense of being. Their geometric prints are sprinkled with stardust and copper, with the metallic media glistening in a way that mirrors nature’s own effects on our body and spirit. The large scales of these prints force the viewer to contemplate the primal abstractions existent in the geometry of nature, with intricately detailed fine lines and sharp edges creating a strange sense of visual movement amongst the muted colors of the works.
The opening reception will take place, Saturday, September 7th at Subliminal Projects from 8-11pm and the exhibition will be open through October 5th.
