K-rails May Soon Disappear From Monrovia

Rails adjacent to Highland Place will remain for now

The Monrovia City Council will consider a plan to begin removing the K-rails that were put in place in the north end of town a few years ago to prevent mudslide and water damage after a fire in the foothills. The plan may be presented as soon as next Tuesday.

City staff is completing a plan that would cost the city as little as possible. This would be done in coordination with the Monrovia Renewal program. The current plan calls for removal in two phases. Based on the city’s experience over the past five years since the fire, the proposed plan calls for removing all the rails, except those adjacent to Highland Place, in late October and early November of this year. This schedule will allow the city to implement the plan with the Renewal projects in that part of the city and thus not cost the city any money. This process may take a few months.

During the next rainy season the city staff will closely monitor the situation around Highland to determine the best time to remove the K-rails in that part of the city. The goal is to remove the rails and prevent any chance of flooding on Highland Place. It is hoped these last rails can be removed during the first quarter of 2019.
