How to Beat an Escape Room

So you’ve finally done it, you booked your first escape room experience. Here is the part where the uncertainty sets in and you begin to doubt the logic of your decision. After all, you’re just looking for a fun night out with friends. What exactly have you gotten yourself, and your unsuspecting crew into? If you are currently scouring the internet in a last-ditch effort to prepare for this experience, look no further.

At Unity Escape Rooms, we are a top-rated entertainment venue across Southern California and are sure to give you a night you’ll remember. An escape room is a real-life activity in which players are “locked” in a room. In a race against the clock, players must work together, find clues, and solve puzzles to locate the key to escape the room. This experience promotes teamwork, problem-solving, and heightened observation. Well beyond the monotony of watching a movie or playing video games, here you find yourself in the adventure. If you are feeling a bit uncertain, read on to learn just how to beat an escape room.

What Not to Do in an Escape Room

To start, there are a few things that you should not do if you want to have an enjoyable and successful time in your escape room.

The first no-no is ignoring the game master’s instructions. Every clue and cue coming your way impact your game, so pay attention and listen carefully to everything that is said to you. Keep in mind that you can always ask for a hint if you encounter a dead end.

Being destructive and intentionally messing with the space is a surefire way to get a one-way ticket out of the room. It’s best to engage with the props that are moveable and leave out-of-bounds items alone. This includes electrical elements and the ceiling, touching these components can often become a safety issue.

Lastly, and most importantly, do not ignore or attempt to trick your teammates. Keep in mind that an escape room is an intentional opportunity for group collaboration. This is best achieved through open communication and problem-solving. Resist the urge to argue with or distract others.

How to Beat an Escape Room

Beating an escape room starts well before that lock clicks shut. Your team is an important factor in your chances of success. Choose wisely and consider how large or small your group should be – if the maximum group number is 10, keep in mind that you do not have to bring 10 people along. Think of personality dynamics and plan accordingly.

The organization is a large factor in solving escape room clues. Organize your findings and leave keys where you locate them to minimize confusion. Encourage your team to make piles specific to the objects (ie: a “used” or “unused” pile).

Be thorough. Make it a point to search every pocket and on every shelf, and keep tabs on who is searching where. If the team divides and conquers, be sure to come back together to discuss the findings.

Don’t be afraid to ask your host for help. If a code does not work or you need a hint, speak up and ask for assistance.

Lastly, don’t worry about losing. While it’s a nice endorphin boost to win at any game, remember that you and your friends are here to have fun. At the end of the day, this experience is about team building and growing closer together.
