This summer, reading took bibliophiles everywhere with Altadena Library District’s Summer Reading program, but everyone knows “there is no place like home.” Take one final summer journey with your friends Dorothy and Toto to the Emerald City at Altadena Library’s free outdoor screening of “The Wizard of Oz” on Saturday, Aug. 18 in the Main Library parking lot (600 E. Mariposa St., Altadena).

“It has been a joy this summer to see community members of all ages enjoy our Summer Reading programs and let ‘reading take them everywhere,’” says Acting District Director Ryan Roy. “We look forward to celebrating the end of an exciting summer with this opportunity for the community to convene and delight in a family classic together!”

Doors open at 6 p.m., when guests are invited to start setting up their picnic area. While popular music and animated shorts play in the background, families with children can engage in Oz-themed crafts and adults can meet the Haiku Guys + Gals (thehaikuguys.com), a group of poets that use their typewriters to create personalized haikus for guests on the spot. Guests are invited to take their own picnic food; popcorn and treats from food truck Kona Ice will be available for sale. Summer Reading winners from every age group will be announced and celebrated, and the movie will begin at 7:45 p.m. as the sun sets.

Admission is free. Street parking is free. Outside food and drinks are welcome, but alcoholic beverages are not permitted.
