2020 elections: Battle continues for LAUSD District 3 board seat
Los Angeles Unified school board District 3 incumbent Scott Schmerelson and challenger Marilyn Koziatek Los Angeles Unified school board District 3 District: Includes West San Fernando Valley and portions of the South Valley through North Hollywood Incumbent: Scott Schmerelson, 69, was elected to the board in 2015 after nearly four decades as an educator. He has been a classroom teacher, counselor and principal and is currently the director of Region 21 of the California School Boards Association. He previously served as president and executive director of Region 16 of the Association of California School Administrators. Challenger: Marilyn Koziatek, 39, is the mother of two boys and, if elected, could be the only board member with children currently enrolled in the district. Her sons attend a traditional LAUSD school while she works at a charter school. Koziatek also chairs the Valley Industry Commerce Association’s education committee and sits on the education advisory committee for state Assembly District 38. The race: Schmerelson has the backing of three current school board members while Koziatek is endorsed by one.
