Tower Records Turns to Art Exhibit for One Weekend Only

Billy Morrison and Plastic Jesus team up for a one-weekend only art exhibit

Tower Records comes back to life as Gibson Brands Inc. teams up with former punk rocker Billy Morrison and street artist Plastic Jesus for a one-weekend art exhibit in the once popular Sunset Strip building. Since it closed in 2006, Tower Records sat vacant but now it will be revamped for an art exhibit titled Anesthesia: The Art of Oblivion. The exhibit will run for one weekend only, opening Friday, February 24 with a VIP reception from 7-11 p.m., and open to the public Saturday, February 25 from noon to 9 p.m.

Heralded as the ultimate collaboration, Anesthesia: The Art of Oblivion  features 36 works from internationally acclaimed artists Billy Morrison and Plastic Jesus, ranging from paintings to large-scale installation pieces. Also, co-sponsor Aston Martin will be presenting their popular cars, and VIPs can meet the artists in the VIP lounge: a posh tour bus parked out back.

International artists Billy Morrison and Plastic Jesus main focus for the exhibit is to show visual representations of unfortunate situations mixed with the constant influx of stimulation and curated excitement of other people’s lives that have become a norm to reality. Distractions, such as social media, and false information, that comes from gossip magazines, have taken the art world a step back, but visual representations of our reality will provide a scope into what is real and what is not. It will also be a representation of the world that we live in.

Held at Gibson Brands Sunset (the old Tower Records store) on Sunset Boulevard, Anesthesia: The Art of Oblivion confronts the dubious nature of notoriety, losing ourselves through our vices, and drawing on these experiences to create escapes within popular culture through art.
