Photo by Thomas R Cordova While Long Beach will avoid extreme heat this week, with temperatures predicted in the low- to mid-80s, residents could still experience rolling blackouts caused by high temperatures throughout much of greater Los Angeles. Extreme heat led to a significant drain on the state’s power grid this weekend and led to some Long Beach neighborhoods becoming part of rare statewide rolling power outages , Friday, affecting more than 130,000 Southern California Edison customers. With the National Weather Service predicting temperatures in parts of greater Los Angeles to reach the mid-90s, the California Independent System Operator , which manages the state’s power grid, announced a continuation of the heatwave could lead to additional emergency blackouts. To deal with the high heat, Long Beach officials announced the opening of five cooling centers, this weekend.
