Trader Joe’s has applied for permission to redevelop the grocery chain’s headquarters at 800 S. Shamrock Ave. in Monrovia, city officials said last week.
Proposed plans include demolition of the existing office building and parking lot to clear the way for a two-story headquarters totaling roughly 96,000 square feet with a new parking structure, according to the city’s announcement. The proposed five-level parking structure provides 600 parking spaces, with two underground levels and three levels above grade.
The headquarters would continue to house the business’ national offices comprised of administrative space, training facilities and a tasting kitchen, officials said.
“The proposal is in its early pre-application stage, and Monrovia staff is coordinating initial technical review,” the city government reported. “The project will require multiple discretionary approvals and environmental review under the California Environmental Quality Act, and residents will have several opportunities for public input as it moves forward, including an anticipated neighborhood meeting and CEQA scoping meeting.”
Additional required approvals are expected to include a General Plan amendment, adoption of a Specific Plan for the project, zoning amendments and conditional use permits.
