Gasoline prices in Southern California continue toward $6 a gallon

The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in Los Angeles County climbed 3.8 cents Tuesday to $5.933, the highest since Oct. 10, 2023.

The LA County average has increased 33 of the past 34 days, rising $1.314, including 2.5 cents Monday, according to the AAA and Oil Price Information Service. The price is 30 cents higher than a week ago, $1.263 higher than one month ago and $1.274 more expensive than at the same time last year.

Despite the monthlong price spike, the average pump price for regular gas is 56.1 cents less than the record $6.494 set on Oct. 5, 2022.

The Orange County average increased 2.8 cents Tuesday to $5.887, the highest price since Oct. 6, 2023. It has risen 54 days in a row, rising $1.644, including 1.8 cents Monday. The OC average is 28.9 cents higher than one week ago and $1.281 higher than a month ago and one year ago.

Tuesday’s average price is 57.2 cents less than the record $6.459 set Oct. 5, 2022.

Prices were rising slightly in line with seasonal norms before the U.S. and Israel jointly attacked Iran on Feb. 28, pushing oil prices higher and drastically accelerating price spikes at the retail-level gas pump.

The national average price reached its highest amount since Aug. 12, 2022, rising 2.1 cents to $3.977. It has increased for 24 consecutive days, rising 99.5 cents, with 1.4-cent increase on Monday. The national average price is 18.7 cents higher than one week ago, $1.026 more than a month ago and 84.9 cents more than a year ago.

The national average is $1.039 less than the record $5.016 set on June 14, 2022.

“Yesterday’s market selloff is going to (at least) give a pause to rising gasoline prices and gives some price cycling states more breathing room before next potential jumps,” Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, which provides real-time gas price information from more than 150,000 stations, posted on social media Tuesday.

Riverside County

The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in Riverside County rose Tuesday to its highest amount since Oct. 9, 2023, increasing 3.1 cents to $5.794.

The average price has risen 55 of the past 56 days, increasing $1.653, including 2.5 cents on Monday, according to the AAA and Oil Price Information Service. It increased 20 days in a row, was unchanged Feb. 18 and resumed rising the next day.

The Riverside County average price is 28.5 cents more than a week ago, $1.272 higher than a month ago and $1.296 greater than one year ago.

The average is 57.9 cents less than the record $6.373 on Oct. 5, 2022.
