The City of Rancho Cucamonga has been awarded a second grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to support its Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Program. The grant program runs through September 2026.
“We are honored to receive the OTS Grant for another year, which enables us to continue expanding our bicycle and pedestrian safety education and encouragement program,” said Justine Garcia, City of Rancho Cucamonga, deputy director of engineering. “Building on the momentum of our initial award cycle, we remain committed to educating the public, raising awareness, and promoting safe practices. This year, we’re especially excited to broaden our efforts to include e-bike safety education. Our goal remains the same: to reduce crashes, prevent injuries, and foster a safer, more walkable, and bike-friendly environment for everyone.”
Grant funds will support various activities focused on bicycle and pedestrian safety:
- E-bike safety courses and certification programs to educate older youth on e-bike laws, best traffic safety practices, and repair skills.
- Coordinate walking school buses and bike trains to encourage safe, active transportation for students.
- Kindergarten physical education bicycle courses that teach students how to ride safely and navigate their environment at an early age.
- Bicycle training courses that educate youth on safe riding behaviors.
- Helmet fitting inspections and distribution of helmets to children in need to ensure proper safety gear is accessible.
- Community and school education presentations.
- Community bike rides that encourage and teach riders safe riding skills.
- Pop-up events that promote the importance of visibility on roads with safety equipment such as reflective armbands/leg bands and bicycle headlights/taillights.
“The safety of people walking and biking on our roads is a top priority for our office,” OTS Director Stephanie Dougherty said. “Everyone moves, and not always by car. It’s important that we invest in efforts to protect people walking, biking and rolling that helps establish a strong traffic safety culture where everyone on California roads can travel to and from places safely.”
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
