Pickleball is coming to Duarte. At its regular meeting on June 25, Duarte City Council awarded a construction contract for the Royal Oaks Pickleball Court Conversion and Tennis Court Resurfacing Project to Trueline Construction & Surfacing Inc. for a total project budget of $116,462.
Earlier this year, at its regular City Council meeting on Feb. 13, the Duarte City Council approved the full conversion of one existing tennis court at Royal Oaks Park (2627 Royal Oaks Drive) to two permanent pickleball courts, and to paint pickleball lines on the other tennis court side to allow it to be used as a tennis court and/or pickleball courts.
The Royal Oaks Pickleball Court Conversion and Tennis Court Resurfacing Project, set to begin on Tuesday, Oct. 1, consists of:
- Power washing and grinding off the current surface to a tight finish, acid etch, and prime the surfaces of both courts
- Removing existing tennis courts posts on both courts
- Applying Sportmaster black resurfacer coat and two coats of Sportmaster Color System for a medium speed of play for both courts
- Striping play lines for two games of Pickleball facing North/South, sharp and accurate to ASBA specs on Court 1 and striping play lines for a combination of one game of tennis court facing North/South and two games of pickleball courts, sharp and accurate to ASBA specs on Court 2.
- Removing and replacing caulking, removing and properly disposing of existing chain link fence and windscreen on both courts.
- Repairing one existing fence post and painting all existing fence posts and pipe framing black.
- Installing a 12 feet high black vinyl coated chain link fence around perimeter of courts, a 7 feet high black vinyl coated chain link fence partially between both courts, and a 3 feet high black vinyl coated chain link fence between the Court 1 pickleball courts.
- Installing an 8 feet high commercial mesh windscreen with two printed Duarte logos on them.
As a result of the project, the tennis courts at Royal Oaks Park will be closed to the public after this September.
The project is anticipated to take about 4 weeks to complete, barring any unforeseen weather conditions that may affect the timeline. The city will provide updates on accessduarte.com and social media platforms as information becomes available.
