On June 19, the City of Azusa held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to inaugurate the operation of eight new wind turbines in North Palm Springs, expanding the city’s current clean energy capacity. The Mesa RP30 Wind Energy Center will generate up to 30-megawatts (MW) of wind power, supplying approximately half of Azusa’s energy needs under a 25-year agreement with renewable energy company, Brookfield Renewable. These new turbines, replacing over 400 older turbines with advanced Vestas models, are taller and more efficient, with longer blades that increase electricity production even in low wind conditions.

“This project is a great example of how evolving technologies can help meet our growing energy needs
locally in Azusa” stated Azusa Mayor Robert Gonzales. “Our aim through these efforts is to increase
capacity, reduce our carbon footprint, and save customers money in the long-term” he added.

The new Wind Project also supports Azusa’s environmental sustainability goals and meets California’s
renewable and zero-carbon energy mix requirement by December 31, 2045, as mandated by Senate Bill

“This power purchase agreement is a big milestone in expanding our renewable energy portfolio and
ensuring the future sustainability of Azusa’s energy needs” said Tikan Singh, General Manager of Azusa
Light & Water. “The project will provide Azusa residential and business customers access to clean, reliable,
and competitively priced energy for the next 25 years, and positions us as a leader in renewable energy
among other cities across the country.” The city’s renewable energy mix also includes solar and
hydroelectric generation.
