A 35-year-old woman who had been shot was found dead Tuesday inside a black SUV that crashed on an offramp from the southbound Long Beach (710) Freeway in Long Beach.
Officers sent to the Anaheim Street offramp about 2:30 a.m. found Mercedes Mingo of Los Angeles dead at the scene behind the wheel of the SUV, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Mingo had suffered at least one gunshot wound to her upper body, according to Fox11, which reported that the SUV she was driving had Nevada license plates.
There was no immediate information available on a possible suspect in the shooting. It was unclear whether the woman died from the gunshot wound or the resulting crash.
“There are what appear to be bullet holes on the left side of that vehicle,” CHP Capt. Joe Zizi said. “Upon arrival by CHP officers, we did find one occupant in the vehicle. It was a Black female adult who was deceased when the fire department arrived. It is an active crime scene right now. There are about 10 detectives combing the area and they have since reached out looking for additional leads, sources, witnesses.”
The CHP is asking for the public’s help in their investigation, hoping someone else driving on either side of the freeway may have seen something and have information.
“We’d like the public to know that if they see anything, if they are a witness to anything or at any point feel unsafe, to dial 911 to give us a call,” CHP Officer Angelia Gonzales said.
