Two Riverside nonprofit organizations received a total $386,164 in grants from the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development to help fund training for prospective counselors, who will aid families with placement in affordable housing or first-time home purchases, it was announced Monday.
Credit.org, headquartered near UC Riverside, received a $336,061 grant, and the Fair Housing Council of Riverside County, headquartered in downtown Riverside, received $50,103, according to HUD.
The two nonprofits were among 177 entities nationwide that received an aggregate $51 million in 2021-22 “Comprehensive Housing Counseling Awards,” HUD said.
“Whether a family is seeking affordable rental housing, buying their first home, or struggling to stay in current housing, now more than ever, housing counselors are supporting families’ housing needs,” HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge said in a statement.
The funds are intended to be spent hiring and training new counselors whose responsibilities will include finding resources for families threatened with foreclosure or eviction, as well as providing assistance with identifying mortgage loan opportunities for low-income buyers, particularly minorities, according to federal officials.
