On Dec. 29, 2021, President Biden appointed San Gabriel City Councilmember Jason Pu as a Regional Administrator with the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Mr. Pu will oversee Region 9, which serves California, Arizona, Hawaii, Nevada, the territory of Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and American Samoa. He will play a key role in leading the distribution of housing assistance funds and will oversee field offices to ensure that local communities benefit directly from HUD programs and funding.

The City of San Gabriel congratulated Mr. Pu on his presidential appointment to HUD through a statement on Wednesday, and his term began on Jan 3, 2022. He has stepped down from his elected position on San Gabriel City Council effective immediately.

“Words cannot express how much it has meant to me to serve the San Gabriel community and to work so closely with the dedicated Council and staff for the past nine years. We have accomplished so much together and I have no doubt that you will continue that tradition without me. I am excited to be joining the Biden-Harris Administration and the great people at HUD under Secretary Marcia Fudge, but I will truly miss being part of this small but mighty team.”

He was first elected to City Council in 2013 and was reelected in 2017. Throughout his time on the city council, he has served as mayor twice and has been instrumental in addressing regional housing and homelessness issues, fixing the city’s infrastructure, stimulating local economic development through various development projects, and championing causes related to equity and fair access.

The San Gabriel City Council has officially declared Mr. Pu’s seat vacant and will be accepting applications from the community to fill the vacancy until the regular election in Nov. 2022.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, be registered voters in the incorporated boundaries of San Gabriel, and have a demonstrated interest in serving the community. Prospective applicants can find more information at www.sangabrielcity.com/87/City-Council, and applications will not be accepted later than 5 p.m. on Feb. 8.
