Man dies after deputy-involved shooting in Lancaster

A man shot by sheriff’s deputies following a pursuit in Lancaster has died and Friday Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department’s Homicide detectives are investigating the shooting.

Deputies were called at approximately 4:10 p.m. Thursday to Deputy Pierre W. Bain Park at 45045 Fifth Street East where a man was brandishing a firearm in the park and pointing it at passing vehicles and park visitors, said Deputy Morgan Arteaga of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

An LASD helicopter was flying over the park, saw the suspect get into a white vehicle and began following the vehicle after it left the location, Arteaga said. The suspect drove westbound on Avenue B into a dirt parking lot located at West Avenue B and Sierra Highway in the unincorporated area of Lancaster and deputies, utilizing an armored rescue vehicle, approached the suspect’s vehicle.

At that time, authorities say the suspect pointed a firearm at the helicopter and the approaching deputies in the armored response vehicle. A deputy-involved shooting followed.

The suspect was struck by gunfire and was immediately treated at the scene for his injuries, Arteaga said. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

There is no additional information at this time.

No deputies or civilians were injured and a handgun deputies say belonged to the suspect was recovered at the scene.
