City Council approves pilot project to install first EV charging stations in Old Town Monrovia

4 EV charging station to be located at Public Parking Lot #4

The Monrovia City Council has approved a pilot project to begin installing EV charging stations at city facilities, including in Old Town. Under the program, a total of four Level 2 EV charging stations would be installed at Public Parking Lot #4, located along the 100 block of East Lemon Avenue, according to City Manager Dylan Feik.

Funds for the pilot program are “not to exceed $112,600.00 from the AQMD Motor Vehicle Subvention (AB 2766) Fund for the purchase and installation of the EV Charging Stations,” according to a staff report.

There are currently a total of 16 public EV charging stations located in or nearby Monrovia. The pilot project will increase that number by 25%, bringing the number of public charging stations to 20 before the close of the year. The pilot project will also install additional EV charging stations at city staff parking lots to support its growing EV fleet. The City Council has stated a desire to deploy charging stations throughout the city, and staff is investigating opportunities to install additional stations at other locations in the future.

The project is expected to break ground soon, with the chargers installed and available for use by summer 2021.
